You hear it in propaganda almost on a daily basis. “Defend freedom, be a soldier.” I heard this phrase recently on the television and it got me thinking, “If they care so much about our troops, why are they always being shafted?” The double standard that I have noticed within our country, especially when it comes to our troops, is they glorify soldiers while cutting their benefits, sending them to wars that they should not be in, and then burning the families of the fallen. I don’t know about you, but I see this as something that is of great concern.
I remember growing up and hanging out with the old school vets. You know the ones in which I’m speaking of. They had this mentality of “you mess with me and I’ll rip every limb from their sockets.” Yeah, they were awesome. But I also recall them talking about how their benefits were being cut and how they couldn’t afford their medications, doctor bills, etc. At the time I didn’t understand what this meant. As I grew up, most of these men grew older and died. The thing that really pissed me off about this was how little the Government helped the families who couldn’t afford the burials; in my eyes, something was seriously fucked up with this.
I have wished for years the Government would make an advertisement that was a bit more accurate. In fact, I have the perfect script: “Become a soldier, fight for yours, and everybody else’s, country. die and be a hero but don’t expect us to help ya’ll out. Expect pay cuts as well as benefits cuts as we cannot manage money.” I dunno, think it’s a bit more accurate? I do.
The other thing that bothers me is the sight of a homeless vet. I recently went to Nebraska and had this honor of meeting some of these great men. One in specific has been fighting for his benefits for years; so far, the Government is giving him hell. I threw him what money I could, thanked him for his service, and continued with my business. However, this man never left my mind. He looked like something from Duck Dynasty with a long ragged beard and firm to heart religion, but it didn’t change the fact he had been shafted by the very nation he swore to serve. it’s as I said, ” something is seriously fucked up here.”
War on Corruption.
